Sanjay Dutt to return to jail

The Centre’s Ministry of Home Affairs had asked the Maharashtra state government to consider reducing the sentence of Dutt on humanitarian grounds

Sanjay Dutt will spend this year’s Diwali in Yerawada Central Prison. He will return fromfurlough on October 30, confirmed the jail officials. After being imprisoned for 137 days at Yerawada prison, the incarcerated actor was released from jail on furlough for 14 days on October 1. It is learnt that due to some disease, blood clots have formed in Dutt’s legs, for which he is expected to undergo medical treatment.
Dutt is serving a 42-month sentence for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He had surrendered before a special TADA court in Mumbai in May and was later shifted to Yerawada jail to serve the remainder of his term.
Deputy inspector general (prisons) Rajendra Dhamane said, “Dutt will be returning to jail by 5 pm on October 30.” The first day of Diwali festival begins on Thursday and Dutt will have to return to jail on Wednesday itself. In July, Dutt had appealed for 30-day parole on medical grounds which can be later extended to 90 days.
He was granted 14-day furlough that was later extended to another 14 days that will end on October 30. Divisional commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh remained mum on the issue of granting parole on medical grounds to Dutt. Deshmukh has rejected the parole of Zaibunnisa Kazi (76) who is convicted in the same case and is lodged in the women cell of Yerawada Central Prison.
